Longhorns get back to their winning ways

Lutheran West was ready to celebrate Friday night, welcoming in its 12th athletic Hall of Fame Class during a special halftime ceremony. The current basketball team, lugging in a four-game losing streak into Friday night\'s Patriot Athletic Conference crossover showdown against Black River, were ready to do some celebrating as well. The long-awaited return of junior standout Scottie Berghaus, who made his first appearance in the lineup since breaking his arm in early December, gave the Longhorns an emotional boost. They felt they were getting the missing piece back in their offense. Add in a packed house was on hand at Lutheran West High School to welcome in the newest Hall of Fame class of Debbie (Glawe) Uffelman, Lisa (Fenn) Mahooti, Ben Miller and Scott Blackburn, and all the ingredients were there for a Longhorn uprising.    (888 reads)

Longhorns' win streak snapped by red-hot Raiders

Lutheran West came into Friday night\'s game as one of the hottest teams in the area, having won three consecutive games including big wins over Clearview and Brooklyn in Stripes Division play. The Longhorns also came into Columbia High School having the Raiders\' number, winning three straight games and single-handedly holding them off for the Patriot Athletic Conference Stripes Division title. And, with the Raiders struggling in the early part of the season, it seemed like the trend would continue. Columbia had other plans. Utilizing a fast-placed offensive style which resulted in 10 3-pointers made, the Raiders opened up a big first half lead on the Longhorns and kept building it until the final buzzer. Columbia, thanks to three double-figure scorers...    (783 reads)

Longhorns hand Clippers second-straight loss

Clearview came into Tuesday night\'s Patriot Athletic Conference Stripes Division game at Lutheran West High School as one of the hottest teams in the area. The Clippers had just lost a tough two-point game at Elyria Catholic for their first loss of the season, and many had them projected to win the six-team Stripes Division based off the talent they had coming back. One of which was first-year Lutheran West coach Drew Senney. However, it was Longhorns who were red-hot Tuesday night. Despite being without junior Scottie Berghaus, who is out for four weeks after suffering a broken wrist earlier this season, the Longhorns scorched the nets at a 58-percent clip (24 of 24), including 9 of 16 from beyond the 3-point arc, Lutheran West stunned the Clippers, 61-50.    (827 reads)

Horns open Stripes play with win over Fairview

Anytime you can open up play in the Patriot Athletic Conference Stripes Division with a win is big. Anytime you can do it over a backyard rival is even better. Thanks to Tommy Walker\'s 19 points and Sean Voiers\' 16, the Longhorns never trailed in Tuesday night\'s divisional game with Fairview and pulled away for a 57-48 victory at home. The Longhorns improved to 2-3 (2-2 PAC), while Fairview falls to 2-3 (2-2). Scottie Berghaus added 11, giving the Longhorns three players in double-digit scoring Tuesday. \"This is a great step for our team,\" first-year Lutheran West coach Drew Senney said. \"In all of our games leading up to tonight, we either allowed our opponents to take over the game late or we took over the game late and rallied for a win.    (1048 reads)

Longhorns use late surge to down Firelands

Any time a team is playing its former coach, especially so early in the season, it\'s going to be an emotional game. Emotions may have gotten the best of Lutheran West in the early going of Tuesday night\'s Patriot Athletic Conference crossover game at Firelands High School. But, in the fourth quarter, everything finally came together. After struggling to get anything going in the Longhorns\' first meeting against longtime former coach Alan Januzzi, they used a 21-point outburst - keyed by back-to-back 3-pointers by Sean Voiers and Scottie Berghaus with just over a minute remaining - to a come-from-behind 45-40 win over Firelands. Lutheran West (1-2, 1-1) had only scored 24 points by the end of the third quarter and trailed Firelands (2-2, 1-1), 28-24. At one point, first-year coach Drew Senney did...    (1011 reads)
