Buffington, Westlake dominate on the court again|
Jun 07, 2012 - The 2012 season was definitely one to remember for the Westlake boys tennis team.
And it definitely was a spring Colton Buffington will never forget.
Buffington, the team’s number one singles players, led the Demons to their fourth straight Southwestern Conference team championship. To top that off, he made his fourth trip to the OHSAA state championships in Columbus and came away...
Westlake falls short in bid for state championship|
Jun 04, 2012 - Throughout the 2012 tournament, the Westlake baseball team had come up with the winning combination of solid pitching, clutch hitting and strong defensive play. The result was a run all the way to the Division I championship game Saturday afternoon in Columbus.
Under sunny skies at Huntington Park, however, the Demons fell short in all three categories against perennial state powerhouse Cincinnati Moeller. Even so, they made the Crusaders squirm until the very end.
Westlake scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it was too little, too late as Moeller came away with a 9-6 win and its sixth state championship since 1972. The Crusaders prevailed despite getting outscored...
Demons do it again, face Moeller for state crown|
Jun 01, 2012 - In winning 20 of its last 22 games, the 2012 season has come down to this for the Westlake baseball team:
The Demons have a date with destiny.
After needing back-to-back seventh inning rallies to make it to Columbus, Westlake took the lead for good in the fourth inning in Thursday’s Division I state semifinal game at Huntington Park. The Demons built their lead from there and went on to a 6-2 win over Massillon Perry...
State Bound! Westlake nine rally for regional title|
May 26, 2012 - For two straight days, the Westlake baseball team starred straight into the eyes of a season-ending defeat. Down to their final at bats, the Demons had their backs against the wall against two tough opponents in perennial powerhouse St. Ignatius and state-ranked Ashland.
And for two straight days, those Demons had the standing-room-only crowds at Nobby’s Ballpark walking away stunned and amazed. And, in the case of the Westlake faithful, celebrating in a total state of euphoria.
The Comeback Kids were headed to Columbus...
DI Baseball: Demons nip Eagles for district crown|
May 21, 2012 - It has been said that pitching is the number one component to winning a championship in baseball.
If that is indeed the case, the Westlake Demons are feeling pretty good about their chances this week.
The Demons have advanced to this week’s Division I regional semifinals on the strength of stellar back-to-back pitching performances last week. On Wednesday, Ben Neumann went the distance and out-pitched Kentucky recruit Eric Lauer in a 4-2 win over Midview at The Pipe Yard in Lorain.
Then on Thursday, his cousin Kevin threw a four-pitch shutout as the Demons blanked top-seeded Avon, 1-0...
DI Baseball: Westlake advances to district finals|
May 16, 2012 - Under sun-drenched skies at The Pipe Yard, the Westlake baseball team faced one of its biggest challenges in the Lorain Division I district semifinals.
In the third base dugout was Midview, co-champions of the West Shore Conference. The Middies featured a potent offense, a solid defense and junior lefty Eric Lauer, who had recently given a verbal commitment to pitch for the University of Kentucky. The Demons, however, had been on a roll...
DI Fastpitch: Gambetta, Demons topple Amherst|
May 15, 2012 - As it turned out, the third time was the charm for the Westlake fastpitch softball team...
...with a big assist from Mackenzie Gambetta.
During the regular season, the Demons had lost both games to Amherst in Southwestern Conference play. But on Monday at North Ridgeville, the Westlake senior broke a 4-4 tie with her one out, two-run double in the top of the seventh inning...
DI: Latham, Lackner lead Demons to sectional title|
May 11, 2012 - Down 6-0 early against visiting Lakewood, the Westlake baseball team was in trouble. The Demons needed something big to change the momentum of the game, some kind of offensive explosion to jump start a comeback.
In the bottom of the third inning, Kyle Latham set the fuse and Jamie Lackner provided the match.
Latham’s leadoff double was followed up by Lackner’s grand slam home run to spark a five-run rally. Another leadoff hit by Latham...
Softball: Bay, Westlake ready for tournament play|
May 09, 2012 - After a rainy start to the week, the 2012 OHSAA Fastpitch Tournament should get back on track on Wednesday. Most Westshore teams will be in action, including Bay and Westlake.
The Rockets are coming off a doubleheader loss to Westlake on Saturday. The Demons blanked Bay, 5-0, in the first game on Jesse Moracz’s shutout, then came back with a 9-1 win in the second game. Westlake, now 14-8, scored eight runs in the second inning on three hits, four walks and three Bay errors.
“It was a good day to get refocused,” said Westlake head coach Tom Shiban, whose team had lost...
Bees catch up to Westlake in SWC fastpitch race|
May 03, 2012 - Throughout the 2012 season, the Westlake fastpitch team has been able to pull out some important games with some late-inning rallies.
Just last week, the Demons rallied in the final two innings to top Avon Lake, then capped off their week with an extra inning 6-5 win over North Ridgeville in non-conference play. A narrow 2-1 win over North Olmsted on Monday had them in a tie for first place with Amherst in the Southwestern Conference race. But on a warm, breezy Wednesday afternoon...
Demons remain in first, rally late past Shoregals|
Apr 26, 2012 - For five innings, head coach Tom Shiban and his Westlake Demons probably felt like they were at a casting call for a sequel to the movie Ground Hogs Day.
On Monday, the Demons gave up a three-run homer early and dropped a 4-0 decision to Amherst, throwing the Southwestern Conference fastpitch race into a three-way tie. On Wednesday, a three-run homer in the first inning off the bat of Avon Lake’s Alexis Thomas led to another 4-0 deficit.
But when Julia Kosco was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, the ending of that sequel was edited out and left on the cutting room floor. Westlake scored...
Big second quarter gets St. Edward past Demons|
Apr 22, 2012 - With the final seconds of the first quarter ticking away, Westlake’s Adam Sandor took a pass from Jake Bechtel and zipped the ball past St. Edward goalie Drew Simpson.
That gave the Demons a 3-2 lead over the Eagles, a lead that proved to be short-lived. The visitors exploded for eight goals in the second quarter and fought off a second-half rally by the Demons for a 17-10 win Friday night at Read Field.
It was just the third loss of the season for the young Demons, who fell to 6-3...
Westlake's Neumann silences North Olmsted bats|
Apr 13, 2012 - For the better part of the game, Thursday’s Southwestern Conference baseball matchup between Westlake and North Olmsted was a pitchers’ duel. Seniors Dan Doyle of the Eagles and Ben Neumann of the Demons matched each other pitch for pitch, making base runners hard to come by.
Both pitchers were on their game. Neumann was just a bit better.
Neumann threw a gem, blanking the potent Eagle offense on six hits to lead Westlake to a 4-0 win at North Olmsted Park. The win got the Demons back to even at 2-2 in the SWC and tied them with the Eagles in the league standings behind front runners Amherst, Avon Lake and Brecksville.
The lanky righty went the distance, striking out six and walking just two in moving to 2-1 on the season.
“He’s been consistent for us so far this season...
Errors costly for Shoregals as Westlake prevails|
Apr 10, 2012 - So far this season, Westlake head softball coach Tom Shiban has been searching for more consistency from his team’s offense.
Monday afternoon at Avon Lake, Shiban was still looking. The Shoregals’ defense, however, was more than happy to lend a hand in the meantime.
The Demons evened their record, both overall and in the Southwestern Conference, using five errors to their advantage in a 5-2 win over Avon Lake. Westlake and Avon Lake are now 1-1 in the SWC, tied with Midpark and Olmsted Falls behind unbeaten Amherst and Brecksville.
“The first inning, we hit the ball really well,” said Shiban, whose team jumped out to a 2-0 lead to start the game...
Miscues lead to extra-inning loss for Demon nine|
Mar 28, 2012 - After an opening day loss at Avon, the Westlake baseball team was looking to regroup in its home opener against Elyria Catholic.
A disastrous sixth inning, however, played a big part in the Demons’ second loss in as many days. The Panthers scored six runs on just two hits that inning, turning a 7-3 deficit into a 9-7 lead.
The visitors would later score a pair of runs in the top of the 10th inning...
DI Boys: Radjen, Bees end Demons' district hopes|
Mar 09, 2012 - When Shawn Hood looks back at Westlake’s 46-41 district semifinal loss to Brecksville, he’ll more than likely blame it on these three things:
Too many missed free throws.
Too many missed shots in the fourth quarter.
Way too much Danilo Radjen.
Radjen, held in check by the Demons through the first three quarters, scored 10 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter and helped the Bees rally for the win in front of a vocal crowd at Midview. The loss ended Westlake’s season at 19-3 and sent 18-4 Brecksville to Saturday night’s Division I district...
DI Boys: The Rematch is set, Demons to face Bees|
Mar 05, 2012 - The rematch.
Ever since a 53-37 beating at the hands of Brecksville last month, the Westlake boys basketball team had hopes of getting another shot at the Bees come tournament season. The top-seeded Demons will get their wish Wednesday night when they take on No. 2 Brecksville in a Division I district semifinal at Midview High School.
The matchup came to fruition last Friday night after a pair of sectional championship games.
Brecksville shot 56 percent from the 3-point line and took out Strongsville, 62-41, in the first game of the doubleheader. Then Westlake took the court and held Amherst to nine first-half points...
DI Girls: Magnificat tops Westlake for district title|
Mar 05, 2012 - It had been 10 years since the Magnificat basketball program had won a district championship. The last time was back in 2002, and the Blue Streaks made it all the way to state final four that season.
In their efforts to get back to the Sweet 16, the third time proved to be the charm for the Streaks.
Magnificat broke open a close game with a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter and defeated Westlake, 64-53, for a Division I district championship Saturday at Elyria Catholic. The Blue Streaks advanced to the Norwalk regional tournament and will take on Wadsworth Tuesday night at Strongsville High School.
The past two seasons, Magnificat had been stopped short of a Parma district title by Midpark. The move out to the new Elyria district brought a new challenge...
DI Girls: Big fourth quarter puts Demons in finals|
Mar 01, 2012 - Ever since the tournament brackets were announced, girls basketball fans were anticipating a potential matchup between Westlake and Lorain.
Wednesday night at Elyria Catholic, those fans got their wish as the second-seeded Demons took on the third-seeded Titans in a Division I district semifinal. And for the better part of three quarters, the game lived up to all the hype and expectations.
But as the fourth quarter began, it soon became evident this was going to be the Demons’ night. Westlake dominated the game...
Westlake's SWC share is one for the record books|
Feb 28, 2012 - When the final buzzer sounded last Friday night, there was plenty of smiles to go around in the Westlake gymnasium.
A little bit of history was made as well.
The Demons had just gained a hard-fought win over Olmsted Falls, 69-63, to win a share of the Southwestern Conference boys basketball championship. For Westlake, 18-2 overall and 12-2 in the league, it was the second hoops title in four years and...
Demons fight off Falls, claim share of SWC crown|
Feb 25, 2012 - With no less than a share of the Southwestern Conference championship on the line, Westlake found itself in a precarious situation.
Visiting Olmsted Falls, which for years had been the flagship boys basketball program in the league, was embracing its new role as the spoiler. The Bulldogs had come to play and sent that message early by running out to a 23-11 first quarter lead.
The Demons, in front of a packed house, were able to right themselves and tie the game by halftime. And in a second half flurry of fast breaks, steals and rugged play under the boards, Westlake emerged victorious, 69-63, to claim its share of the SWC crown Friday night.
The hard-fought win ended the Demons’ regular season...
DI Girls: Westlake rolls again, to face Lorain next|
Feb 23, 2012 - It’s safe to say the Westlake girls basketball team has barely had to break a sweat in its first two games tournament play.
It’s also safe to say things will get much tougher for the Demons from this point on.
For the second straight game, Westlake overwhelmed its opponent in the first quarter. The Demons blanked John Marshall, 22-0, in the first quarter, went to their bench early and often, then cruised to a 63-27 win Wednesday night in a Division I sectional title game at Elyria Catholic.
No. 2 seed Westlake, however, walked off the Coliseum floor...
New foundation aims to improve Westlake's fields|
Feb 22, 2012 - Could the days of wet, muddy field conditions at Westlake’s Lou Duchez Field become a thing of the past?
It could happen in the very near future if a newly-formed citizens group has anything to say about it.
A private group of Westlake citizens has formed a new non-profit foundation dedicated to raising private money which would fund upgrades to the district’s outdoor athletic facilities. The new Westlake Athletic Development Foundation has taken on this project, which would include field turf installation at Duchez, along with...
DI Girls: Westlake dominates in EC tourney debut|
Feb 20, 2012 - The Midview Middies never knew what hit ’em.
Westlake, a defending district champion, opened the new Elyria Catholic Division I district tournament with a bang Saturday afternoon. The Demons could do no wrong, hitting 10 of 21 shots from the floor and forcing 12 Middie turnovers in the first quarter alone.
By the end of the quarter, the game was virtually over.
Up 25-0 after the first eight minutes, the Demons led by as many as 35 points in the second quarter and rolled to a 71-24 sectional semifinal win...
Mustangs next: Demon icers get first district win|
Feb 19, 2012 - In this season of firsts, the Westlake hockey team managed to add one more this week.
On Wednesday, the Demons won their first ever OHSAA district tournament game with a 4-0 shutout win over Lakewood at Brooklyn’s Coyne Recreation Center. The win also gave the Demons their 20th victory of the season.
Westlake, now 20-7-2, will take on Strongsville Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Mustangs, who play in the Red Division North, bring a record of 14-12-1 and a six-game losing streak into the game...
Demons vanquish Meteors, keep pace in SWC race|
Feb 18, 2012 - With just under two minutes left in the third quarter at Westlake, Midpark’s Christian Calton hit a driving floater to give the Meteors a 30-27 lead. In a game that had been a defensive struggle for both teams, a 3-point lead at the time seemed huge.
If the Demons were experiencing a deja vu moment, no one would have blamed them.
But with vision’s of last month’s 46-38 loss at Midpark lurking in the shadows, the Demons responded with an explosive 15-2 run. When it was all said and done, Westlake had erupted...
Red-hot Bees swarm Demons, tie up race in SWC|
Feb 11, 2012 - Anything that could go wrong, did go wrong for the Westlake Demons.
Brecksville came into Friday night’s Southwestern Conference showdown one game behind the first-place Demons. When the smoke cleared, The Hive was buzzing about the Bees’ convincing 53-37 win that tied up the race with two games remaining.
“I believe we were a little frozen by the magnitude of the game early on,” said Demons head coach Shawn Hood, whose team made just two field goals...
Cold shooting dooms Demons, Meteors claim SWC|
Feb 09, 2012 - Prior to Wednesday night’s Southwestern Conference showdown between Westlake and Midpark, both teams had visions of adding another league title to their respective trophy cases.
When it was all said and done, the end result was a dream come true for the Meteors.
For the Demons? It was an utter nightmare...
Depth pays dividends for Demons against Eagles|
Feb 08, 2012 - Throughout the season, Westlake head coach Shawn Hood has consistently used a 10-man rotation. No matter what the score, no matter who has the hot shooting hand that night, the non-stop march to the scorer’s table has remained the norm.
The result coming into the week? A 14-1 overall record and sole possession of first place in the Southwestern Conference.
Hood’s philosophy paid some additional dividends Tuesday night. With two starters out of action, the Demons still had enough...

This coming weekend will more clearly define what road the Demons will take to achieve them.
On Wednesday night, the Demons used a tenacious defense and opportunistic scoring to take out visiting North Olmsted, 49-29, in a Southwestern Conference matchup...
Demons run by Shoremen, take over lead in SWC|
Feb 01, 2012 - Avon Lake head coach Eric Smith was looking for his Shoremen to buck a trend and get off to a good start Tuesday night at Westlake.
Less than four minutes into the game, however, the Demons already had Smith’s team in catchup mode.
Westlake came out of the gates with a 9-2 burst and built its lead from there. Despite a rash of turnovers in the fourth quarter, the Demons came away...
Demon D sends Shoregals home with SWC defeat|

Hockey: Despite loss, Demons continue to grow|
Jan 20, 2012 - So far, the 2011-12 hockey season has been one to remember for the fledging Westlake program.

Awaiting them was defending Baron Cup II champion Amherst...
Video: Eagles split at Westlake mat quadrangular|
Jan 15, 2012 - The Westlake wrestling team hosted Southwestern Conference foe North Olmsted, along with North Ridgevile and Norwalk, last Saturday in non-conference action. The Eagles split their two matches, defeating North Ridgeville, 44-24, but getting edged out by the Truckers, 39-31.
The Demons dropped a 43-24 decision to Norwalk, and ended their day with a narrow 37-36 loss to the Rangers that came down to the heavyweight bout. Larry stopped by to capture some of the action with these photos and video...
Strong starts, finish get Demons past Brecksville|
Jan 14, 2012 - Despite leading the entire game, Westlake had a fight on its hands. It was the fourth quarter, and Brecksville was threatening.
The Demons’ offense was sputtering against the Bees’ zone defense. A 3-pointer from Mark Chrzanowski had brought the visitors to within three points, 38-35, with ample time for a game-winning run.
With the fans on the edge of their seats, the game took a dramatic turn.
With just over two minutes left in regulation, Gavin Skelly...
Bay icers step up, but fall short to Westlake, 3-0|
Jan 13, 2012 - Since mid-December, the Bay hockey team has gone through a tough stretch of games.

“We had 32 shots on net tonight, so that’s a pretty good showing for us,” Kirk said after his team’s loss to the Demons at Hamilton Ice Arena in Rocky River...
Meteors get the best of Demons, take SWC lead|
Jan 09, 2012 - More times than not, a 28-point win over your main league rival and sole possession of first place would have a coach smiling from ear to ear.
But Saturday night, it was evident Midpark head coach Stephanie Mentz had higher aspirations for her Meteors in 2012.
Midpark, the defending Southwestern Conference champions, fought off visiting Westlake with a 10-0 run in the third quarter...
Fourth-quarter run pushes Westlake past Eagles|
Jan 07, 2012 - For the better part of three quarters, North Olmsted and Westlake battled each other on even terms in a key early-season Southwestern Conference hoops matchup.
As the third quarter ended, however, the game would change dramatically.
That’s when point guard Ezzat Assad’s long-range 3-pointer to beat the buzzer pushed the Demons’ lead to 45-35. That shot ignited a 12-4 Westlake run...

Westlake remains unbeaten with win over Eagles|
Dec 18, 2011 - For the better part of the first half, North Olmsted and Westlake looked like mirror images of each other. Both teams were pressing and pushing the ball up the floor at a frantic pace, but not doing much at the offensive end of the floor.
The song remained the same in the second half except for one thing:
The Demons found their scoring touch...
Westlake runs, stuns its way past Braves, 67-53|
Dec 17, 2011 - Back in the 1980s, Cleveland State used its “run and stun” style of basketball to make a name for itself in the college basketball world.
If Friday night was any indication, the “run and stun” is alive and well in Westlake, Ohio.
Westlake hit visiting Berea hard with a 15-3 run in the second quarter, then used a 21-4 run in the third to stun the Braves, 67-53, in a big early-season Southwestern Conference matchup.
With the win, the Demons remained unbeaten...

On Saturday, the two club teams met on their shared home ice at the North Olmsted Recreation Center. The Demons, thanks in part to an early goal by freshman Nathan Greenberg...
Pressure defense helps Demons get by Shoregals|
Dec 12, 2011 - Avon Lake head coach Dave Zvara knew the answer to the question before it was even asked.
“It’s been our one downfall so far this season,” Zvara said.
Westlake, despite some problems of its own, remained undefeated by pressuring the Shoregals into 30 turnovers to come away with a 45-40 win Saturday afternoon at the Avon Lake Fieldhouse...

Demons seize the moment, top River in overtime|
Dec 07, 2011 - After trailing by as many as 21 points in the first half, Rocky River had come all the way back. Visiting Westlake, with two key players already fouled out of the game, was on the ropes.
With the partisan Pirate crowd already whipped into a frenzy, the decibel level rose even higher when River eventually tied the game to send it into overtime. And with a 52-49 lead early on in OT, the momentum was clearly in the Pirates’ favor.
The Demons, however, had other ideas...
Hood, Demons brace for River as new era begins|
Dec 05, 2011 - A new era in Westlake boys basketball begins Tuesday night.
That’s when Shawn Hood, the former Cleveland State standout, makes his debut as the Demons’ head coach. Hood, who was hired last summer, takes his team to Rocky River for a non-conference matchup with the Pirates.
“I think we’re right where we need to be,” said Hood after a recent practice session. “I would imagine everyone’s at the same place and wishing they had a little bit more time to prepare.
“I feel good about our team...
Experience paying off in Demons' second season|
Dec 04, 2011 - One year ago, the Westlake hockey program was hitting the ice for the first time. A roster full of freshmen and inexperienced players went through its fair share of growing pains as the season went on.
But the bottom line was this: The blueprint for the program was finally off the planning board and put into action.
With the 2011-12 season now underway, the Demons have put all of that learning experience to good use...

Avon blanks Demons, earns first DI district crown|
Oct 30, 2011 - There was a time not too long ago when things weren’t going very well for the Avon girls soccer team.
“The wheels were coming off,” said Eagles head coach Tony DiMacchia. “It was midway through the season, and we were dealing with a lot of adversity and a lot of injuries. We weren’t playing well, and we weren’t finishing well.”
All that seemed like ancient history as DiMacchia addressed the media at sun-drenched Reed Field. His Eagles had just finished beating top-seeded Westlake...

Bees leave Westlake with 1-0 win and SWC crown|
Oct 17, 2011 - Saturday’s Southwestern Conference championship game was a tough enough assignment for the Westlake girls soccer team.
Brecksville came to Reed Field with an overall record of 10-1-2 and an undefeated SWC mark of 6-0. The Bees were voted the top seed in the upcoming Division I Kent district tournament and had received votes in the Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association poll.
Throw in dealing with a stiff wind from the west in the second half, and the task became even tougher for the Demons...
Westlake fights back to take Eagles in five sets|
Oct 05, 2011 - In the first set of Tuesday night’s volleyball match at Westlake, North Olmsted made enough mistakes to last an entire match in dropping a 25-19 decision.

The Demons were all but happy to take advantage...

Goal line fumble gives Eagles OT win over Demons|
Sep 24, 2011 - Was it a fumble, or wasn’t it?
For a moment, nobody on the field seemed to know for sure. But when the officials finally ruled that North Olmsted had recovered the ball in the end zone, all the Eagles knew was that they were leaving Westlake with a crazy, hard-fought 21-14 overtime win Friday night.
“We needed that one,” said North Olmsted head coach Mike Ptacek with a smile as his Eagles broke a three-game losing streak and climbed back into the Southwestern Conference race...
State ranked Demons dominate in SWC three peat|
Sep 20, 2011 - Total domination.
Those are the only words that can describe Westlake’s run in the 2011 Southwestern Conference Tennis Tournament Saturday in Medina.
Oh wait. There are two more words:
The state-ranked Demons, ranked third in Division I in the first Ohio Tennis Coaches Association poll Tuesday, got out the brooms and swept the rest of the field away...
Demon defense helps turn away Magnificat, 3-0|
Sep 18, 2011 - As it turned out, the tone was set in the early moments of Westlake’s battle with arch rival Magnificat.
Late in the first minute of Saturday’s girls soccer matchup, Blue Streak forward Shannon Fulton ripped a shot that was headed for the upper part of the goal. Westlake keeper Alexis Carpenter, however, made a leaping save, deflecting the ball off the crossbar.
