Video: Britton, Rockets have season to remember
It was a banner season for the Bay girls cross country team.
The Rockets, behind junior Maddie Britton, repeated as the West Shore Conference champions, then went on to claim the Division I district title at Lorain County Community College in Elyria. A third place finish at the Tiffin regional meet sent them to state, where the Rockets finished eighth.

Local cross country athletes got a chance to get warmed up for their upcoming season by participating in Wednesday’s annual Classic at Mastick.
It was a good night at the Cleveland Metroparks’ Rocky River Reservation for two of the Westshore’s top girls cross country runners. Bay junior Maddie Britton, who led the Rockets to the West Shore Conference championship last season, won the Female 15-16 age bracket. She finished her 5K run with a time of 20:09.3

Video: St. Marie takes runner-up honors at Mastick
It was a homecoming of sorts for Westlake’s Jack St. Marie.
The former Westlake distance ace competed in the annual Classic at Mastick 5K Wednesday and nearly came away with a win. St. Marie took second overall in the Men’s 5K with a time of 16:06.6, just seconds behind the winner, Andrew Cranes and his time of 15:56.9.

Bierut, Connelly cap off successful season at state
As the 2011 cross country season progressed, Rocky River head coach Laura Brabant liked what she saw of her two top runners, Elyse Bierut and Madi Connelly.
The River duo battled through their first year of Division I competition, as well as less-than-perfect course and weather conditions. Despite those obstacles, it was not uncommon to see Bierut leading the pack, with Connelly close behind.

Young Blue Streak harriers finish sixth at state
For three years in a row, the Magnificat cross country team was Ohio’s best. The three Division I championship trophies in the school’s trophy case serve as a constant reminder of that accomplishment.

Rockets get first win of the season at district meet
After losing most of his team to graduation, Bay head coach Steve Babson knew he was in for a rebuilding year. His young Rockets struggled a bit early, and didn’t win a meet the entire regular season.

XC: Bay girls take second at Cloverleaf Invitational
The Bay girls cross country team continued its strong season last Saturday with a runner-up finish at the Todd Clark Cloverleaf Invitational.
The Rockets scored 81 points, just behind the 75 of winner North Royalton and just ahead of the third place team, Walsh Jesuit (82). Sophomore Maddie Britton led the way, finishing sixth with a time of 21:09.97...

River's Bierut wins going away at Fleet Feet Invite
Mud. Standing Water. A very challenging field of 208 runners.
None of that mattered to Elyse Bierut.
The Rocky River senior dominated the course, beating the next closest runner by just under 16 seconds to win the 2011 Fleet Feet Strongsville Invitational last Saturday.

Harriers go up against the best at Tiffin Carnival
The Tiffin Cross Country Carnival is one of the largest, most competitive early-season meets a high school runner can compete in.
On Saturday, a large contingent of harriers from the Westshore area competed against some of the best cross country talent in the state. Nobody had a better day on the course than Rocky River senior Elyse Bierut.

Harriers battle heat, humidity at Early Bird Meet
The heat and humidity made for a tough day on the course at the Avon Lake Early Bird Meet in Elyria Saturday morning. Still, some strong performances were turned in on the always-challenging Lorain County Community College course.
Brunswick, behind the first-place finish of senior Selena Pasadyn, won the Maroon Division team title with a score of 57. Defending state champion Magnificat was second with 115 points, with Toledo Notre Dame Academy right behind in third with 121.

Changing of the guard puts Avon on top in WSC
If Saturday was any indication, there was an unmistakable changing of the guard on display at the West Shore Conference Preview Meet at Cahoon Park
Taking three of the top five spots and seven of the top 18, Avon ran away with the team title with 35 points. Bay, with virtually a new team this season, took runner-up honors with 49 points and three runners in the top 10.
In fact, the Eagles claimed the individual champion and runner-up title as well.

Pirate girls hold off Bay in WSC Preview Meet
The Rocky River girls cross country team is expecting big things in 2011. The same thing could be said for an up-and-coming Bay squad.
Both teams dominated the field Saturday at Cahoon Park, with the Pirates holding off the young Rockets, 33-32, in the West Shore Conference Preview Meet.
