The Rocky River Pirates remained in the hunt for a West Shore Conference boys soccer championship with a 3-0 win over Lakewood Wednesday night at Rocky River Stadium.
The Pirates, now 11-1-1 on the season, got the only goal they needed early in the first half. With just 8:28 gone off the clock, sophomore Liam Duncan took the ball and drilled a long, arching shot from 35 yards out that evaded the leaping save attempt of Rangers goalkeeper Robby Fehrenbach.
That gave Rocky River a 1-0 lead. The lead would grow to 2-0 right before halftime when senior Spencer Klodnick went one-on-one with a Lakewood defender and scored with 4:03 remaining.
In the second half, a long ball found its way to sophomore Jacob Wischmeir on the left side. He sent a crossing pass to his right to junior Sutton Klodnick, who beat Fehrenbach for the goal with 29:39 remaining on the stadium scoreboard.
With the win, the Pirates remained unbeaten in WSC games and tied with arch rival Bay for first place. The two teams will play for all the marbles Wednesday at Rocky River at 7 p.m.
