Magnificat and Westlake, two of the top girls tennis programs in the Westshore area, got their respective 2012 seasons off on the right foot this week.
Westlake, the three-time defending Southwestern Conference champ, opened defense of its crown with a convincing 5-0 win over Olmsted Falls. Magnificat had a tougher go of things Monday, but came away with a 3-2 win over Avon, the defending West Shore Conference champion.
Blue Streaks get past Eagles
Magnificat took the first and second singles matches, then came away with a victory at first doubles to come out ahead of Avon.
At first singles, junior Emily Witt dominated with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Avon’s Madisyn Rini. Sophomore teammate Lauren O’Malley kept pace at second singles with her own 6-1, 6-0 decision over the Eagles’ Halle Mentlar.
Senior Sarah Patrick and her junior doubles partner, Miranda Manitoba, clinched the early-season win with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Annie DeLuca and Maddie Nakon.
Demons dominate in SWC opener
Westlake, led by three-time state qualifier Lauren Golick, had little trouble with the Bulldogs. Falls won just four games the entire afternoon, those coming in the third singles match.
Golick and sophomore Julia Dunbar got Westlake off to a good start with a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins at first and second singles, respectively. Paavani Reddy completed the Demons’ singles sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Michelle Quist.
Sophomore Melissa Djohan and freshman Lindsey Golick, Lauren’s younger sister, took a 6-0, 6-0 first doubles win in their debut as a team. They defeated the Falls duo of Paige Bokman and Gabby Garlitz.
Amanda Jaros and Erin Tanker took care of the Bulldogs’ Katy Kapp and Samantha Traffis in similar fashion, 6-0, 6-0.
Attention coaches: Send us your results!
One of our goals in this, our second season, is to get more match-by-match results published throughout the week. For that to happen, we need a little bit of help from you.
One, feel free to email your results to email@example.com. We need the score, the score of the individual matches and the first and last names of the participants from both schools.
Two, please send us your varsity roster as soon as possible. We want to make sure we have names spelled correctly, along with having the correct grade, etc.
Three, feel free to include any information on any of your players throughout the season. We would love to know the records of singles players and doubles teams, for example. Winning streaks, the team record...all of that information is welcome.
