All-Star Notes: Muldoon, Smith to team up this fallFor Berea-Midpark's Mason Muldoon, the 42nd annual East-West Cuyahoga County All-Star Game was old hat. For North Royalton's Austin Smith, it was brand new. In the fall, the two will merge as one as freshmen on Baldwin-Wallace's football team.

Muldoon, who has played his high school career at BW's George Finnie Stadium, knows every hash mark of the turf. Friday night, the defensive end was there Friday to help his future running back, who was playing in Berea for the first time.

"I told him it's quick, doesn't feel good when you fall, but it's good running," said Muldoon, who registered six tackles. "I told him 'Let's see if you can keep up with me.'"

Fourth-quarter rally falls short as East bests WestWith 9:46 left in the game and his team trailing 14-7, North Olmsted quarterback Brad Novak found himself in familiar territory.

During the regular season, Novak and his Eagles had been involved in a number of close games that came down to the final minutes. On a cool Friday night in Berea, Novak drove the West All-Stars all the way down to the East 23-yard line as the Finnie Stadium clock ticked down to under five minutes remaining.

Bechtel, Seipel to lead area's state track qualifiers
Bechtel, Seipel to lead area's state track qualifiersBay's Olivia Bechtel and Avon Lake's Max Seipel top the list of Westshore area track and field athletes headed to the OHSAA Track and Field Championships this weekend in Columbus.

Bechtel, a sophomore, won two championships and qualified in three events at the Amherst Division I Regional Meet at Richard S. Cooley Track. She won the long jump with a leap of 18-08.00 to edge out Berea-Midpark's Kyla Paster (18-07.75). She then went on to dominate the 400, turning in a time of 55.58.

Bechtel also ran the anchor leg of Bay's runner-up 4X800 squad. She joined Hallie Bechtel, Sarah Christel and Amanda Cusimano to run a 9:23.38 and qualify for the championships at Jesse Owens Stadium.

Seipel, a senior, will close out his high school career by competing in the shot and discus. He took runner-up honors in the discus with a throw of 180-01, then took third in the shot put with his 58-10.00.

Pirates reach Elite 8 again with win over BombersDespite losing six of its last seven regular season games, the Rocky River boys lacrosse team has regrouped and finds itself back in a familiar position:

In the Elite 8.

The Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead, then hit visiting Kenston with a 5-0 second quarter. They held on late in the second half to defeat the Bombers, 10-6, in the second round of the OHSLA Division II Playoffs Wednesday night at Rocky River Stadium.

With wins over Kenston and Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, Rocky River advances to the Elite 8 for the fifth straight season. The Pirates will take on Chagrin Falls, a 15-4 winner over...

Lakewood advances nine events to regional meetHost Lakewood qualified nine events while Bay's Olivia Bechtel took part in three wins at the Lakewood District Track and Field Championships at First Federal Lakewood Stadium

Bechtel, a sophomore, won two individual championships in winning the 400 and the long jump. She joined teammates Amanda Cusimano, Sarah Christel and Hallie Bechtel to win the 4X800 Relay title. In all, the Rockets qualified six events to the Amherst Regional Meet.

Westlake makes history with win over Rocky River
Westlake makes history with win over Rocky RiverWhile it may be too soon to judge whether or not the torch has been passed, it was still a historic night Friday night at Westlake's Read Field.

The Westlake boys lacrosse team, despite seeing its early five-goal lead vanish, scored a pair of goals in the game's final 3:10 to take down Rocky River, 11-9, in the regular season finale for both teams.

It was the Demons' first win since 2010 over the Pirates, who have been to the Division II state championship game the past two seasons. Westlake closed out the regular season winning eight of its last nine games to finish 12-4. Its only loss...

Eagles reign as track and field champions in WSC
Eagles reign as track and field champions in WSCThe Avon track and field program made it a clean sweep at the 2014 West Shore Conference Championships held at Rocky River Stadium.

The Avon boys squad just missed the 200-point mark in the process, racking up 195.5 points to easily outdistance runner-up North Ridgeville (116) and third place Vermilion (85). The Eagle girls fought off challenges from Rocky River and Bay to win the team title with 147.5 points.

Bay's Olivia Bechtel was the top individual in the meet, winning four individual titles. That included a record-setting performance of 18-02 in the long jump...
