State-ranked Rockets relax, maintain first in WSC
State-ranked Rockets relax, maintain first in WSCAfter missing out on a number of scoring opportunities in the first half, Bay head coach Bob Dougherty had a bit of advice for his state-ranked Rockets:

Relax. Kick back. Watch the band.

It worked. After a rousing halftime performance by the Bay High Marching Band, the Rockets returned to the pitch and scored four goals in the second half to take out North Ridgeville, 4-0, in a West Shore Conference game at Memorial Stadium Wednesday night.

“We’ve weathered storms like this before where we’ve watched trying to figure out the puzzle,” Dougherty said. “The discussion we had at halftime was about how our guys...

Panthers sweep Avon, maintain hold on WSC lead
Panthers sweep Avon, maintain hold on WSC leadAfter playing great volleyball over the past few weeks, the youthful Avon squad was looking forward to it’s match at Elyria Catholic Tuesday night.

The Panthers, unbeaten in the West Shore Conference, were ranked fifth in the lastest Division III coaches poll but just one match ahead of the Eagles in the standings. It was an opportunity for Avon to make a statement that their young team had arrived.

Instead, the Eagles left Elyria knowing they had more work to do.

The Panthers held off a furious rally to win the second set, then jumped out to a big lead in the third set to sweep the Eagles 25-15, 25-23, 25-15 at the EC Coliseum. The win gave...

Big second half powers Blue Streaks past BlazersMagnificat head coach John Fenix was less than happy with his team’s first-half performance against visiting Hathaway Brown. But by the end of the contest, he managed to break out into a smile or two.

The state-ranked Blue Streaks, executing the corner kick to near perfection during an eight-minute span in the second half, broke open a close game and rolled to a 6-0 win over the Blazers at chilly Rocky River Stadium Monday night.

With the win, Magnificat boosted it’s record to 8-0-1 on the season, the only blemish...

Rodriguez kicks Eagles past Westlake in overtime
Rodriguez kicks Eagles past Westlake in overtimeWith time expiring in regulation and the crowd on the edge of their collective seats, Tommy Rodriguez’s 25-yard field goal attempt sailed just wide of the right upright.

Not to worry. The North Olmsted senior didn’t have to wait long for his shot at redemption.

With the game moving into overtime, the Eagles’ defense stopped visiting Westlake on four straight plays. North Olmsted took over, and Rodriguez ended the game on a 22-yard field goal to give the Eagles an 18-15 win over the previously...

Week Five: Rangers, River get much-needed winsWith both teams in the throngs of three-game losing streaks, Lakewood and Rocky River were looking for the tide to turn in Week Five of the high school football season.

Lakewood, after building a 22-0 halftime lead at North Ridgeville, had to hold on for dear life in the final seconds to come away with the 22-21 road win. It was Lakewood’s first-ever win in football as a member of the West Shore Conference. At Rocky River, the Pirate defense...

Week Five: Unbeaten Demons to be tested again
Week Five: Unbeaten Demons to be tested againWestlake head coach Mark Campo doesn’t pull any punches when he talks about the Southwestern Conference football championship race, or how his Demons fit into the title picture.

It may only be week five on the schedule, but it’s a must win in his eyes.

“The kids understand that we’re in conference play now and that we can’t afford a loss,” Campo said, as his undefeated squad prepares for a trip to North Olmsted Friday night.

“I’d venture to say that the team that wins the conference will finish undefeated, so it’s real important to be prepared each week. And that’s something that I think the kids have learned. We’re learning how...
